The Formation of Hailstones

Hailstones are fascinating ice formations that develop through a dynamic process within powerful thunderstorms. Their creation involves a perfect combination of atmospheric conditions and physical processes.

The Formation of Hailstones ~40,000 ft ~20,000 ft ~10,000 ft Freezing Level (32°F/0°C) Cumulonimbus Cloud Strong Updrafts Downdrafts Precipitation Zone Hailstone Formation Process: 1. Water droplet freezes forming a small ice particle 2. Updrafts lift the particle where it collects more water 3. Each trip up and down adds a new layer of ice 4. Hailstone falls when too heavy for updrafts to lift Hailstone Cross-Section Red dotted line shows hailstone's journey Large hailstones can reach 2+ inches in diameter

The Birth of a Hailstone

Every hailstone begins as a tiny frozen particle called an ice embryo. This occurs in the upper regions of cumulonimbus clouds where temperatures drop well below freezing. Water droplets in these frigid zones become supercooled – remaining liquid despite being below freezing temperature.

The Growth Cycle

What makes hailstones unique is their journey through the cloud:

  1. Initial Formation: A small ice particle forms when a supercooled water droplet freezes around a nucleus (like a dust particle).
  2. Updraft Journey: The particle is caught in powerful updrafts, which are columns of rising warm air within the storm. These updrafts can reach speeds of 100+ mph in severe storms.
  3. Layer Accumulation: As the ice particle travels through moisture-rich areas of the cloud, supercooled water droplets collide with it and freeze instantly, adding layers of ice.
  4. Cycling Process: The growing hailstone eventually becomes heavy enough to fall against the updraft. However, it may encounter another updraft, sending it upward again. Each cycle adds another layer of ice.
  5. Final Descent: When the hailstone grows too heavy for the storm’s updrafts to support, it falls to the ground.

The Structure Revealed

If you were to cut a hailstone in half, you would see concentric layers similar to an onion. Clear ice layers form when water spreads evenly before freezing, while cloudy layers develop when air bubbles get trapped during rapid freezing. These layers tell the story of the hailstone’s journey through varying temperature zones within the cloud.

Large hailstones – those exceeding 1-2 inches in diameter – are evidence of exceptionally strong thunderstorms with powerful, sustained updrafts that can support their weight through multiple growth cycles.

Most hailstones fall at speeds between 25-40 mph, but very large ones can reach terminal velocities of 100+ mph, explaining their destructive potential during severe storms.

Why Body Shops & Dealerships Use Our Services?

It’s a fact—there is no body shop that has highly skilled hail repair technicians on payroll. Instead, they outsource hail repair jobs to specialists like us.

Even major dealerships and automobile factories rely on companies like Eco Auto Body to handle their hail damage repairs. Here’s why:

  • Specialized Skillset – PDR requires years of training and specialized techniques that most body shop technicians don’t have.
  • Faster Turnaround – Since PDR doesn’t require repainting, it significantly reduces the time it takes to restore a vehicle.
  • Cost-Effective – By preserving original parts and paint, PDR eliminates the need for expensive materials like fillers and new panels.
  • Insurance Collaboration – We know how to negotiate with insurance companies to ensure every dent is accounted for.

When a dealership or a major body shop is faced with an influx of hail-damaged cars, they don’t attempt to fix them in-house—they call us.

Hail & Other FAQ'S

These are some of the most common questions we get asked about hail removal and automotive paint work but don't hesitate to ask us by text, email or call.

We do not own any expensive facilities or expensive employees.  Instead we pride ourselves in having the largest partner community in the business.  We use only eco friendly parts providers and we don't up sell our customers.  We use the "if it isn't broken, then don't fix it" policy.  Meaning we save countless of labor hours and materials instead of making an extra dollar.  We do all the prep work, body work and paintless dent repair and hire out for the rest.
Many of these companies have high overheads and processing customers is one of their most costly expenses.  Much of your repair is administrative work and managing.  If we can eliminate the costly bureaucratic processes then the result will be more time effective but more importantly, eco friendly.

NO – Paintless dent repair is the preferred method of by all professionals repair because it will not harm your factory paint or finish.
NOT LONG – Compared to conventional repairs, paintless dent repair takes about 1/3 of the time it takes a body shop to finish the same repairs.
It is far better for us to meet with the adjuster for many factors.  If we have the car in our care - we will use special lights to make sure the adjuster does not miss anything.  We need to get it done first off instead of having to do what's called a supplement, and this can take up to a week.  So the day before the adjuster is set to see the car, we get you in a car rental and have the vehicle at our shop.

Our Mission

To provide top quality factory level hail repair, paint & body services in a very timely manner.
