If you are wanting to just get some makeup over existing paint and don't care about it lasting too long - there are places that specialize in these types of paint jobs.  This type of work will be fast and cheap but will not last very long and might fail in as little as 6 months to a year.  This type of paint job is mainly for people trying to spruce up a junker or to hurry and sell a vehicle for profit.  This type of shop will mask over everything like windshield, headlights, door handles, trim and moldings etc.  It's not advisable to do this type of prep work because the paint will not properly adhere to the edges and will have a far greater chance at catching something like air and peeling as the paint will pool up in hard lines in all the areas.

Paint & Material

Paint costs can vary vastly in cost and some shops use better more reliable paints than others.  Some shops mix their own paints while others have places like Napa mix theirs by the batch.

Clear coat can also be a big cost factor as some clear coats are guaranteed to last 1-2 years while others are guaranteed for life and everywhere in between.

Filler quality if there's body work that is required can also be a deciding factor in cost as one gallon of cheap filler can cost as little as $25 while others can cost many times that.

Prep Work

Simply taping over existing parts like headlights, glass, handles, belt moldings, bumpers etc will be much more less labor intensive as removal and replacement of these panels and will in turn change the price of the final outcome drastically.

It's really recommended to remove and replace all parts to insure the paint wraps around to the edge to create a proper bond to the panel all the way to the edge.

If there's dents or damage to the existing paint or the paint is showing signs of failure in any way it is very advisable to fix these and sand and re-primer the panels before proceeding to painting and this will change the final cost of a paint job.

Labor & Experience

The skill sets and experience that the staff has at any particular shop will determine the overhead cost for a shop and will be a varying factor in final cost of a full car paint job.

If we simply just tape over the parts and rope the glass with tape then the new paint will pool in these areas creating a hard line that the wind and other debris will be able to damage the edge of the paint.  This will drastically affect the life of your paint so that is why here at Eco Auto Body we don't do this type of paint job and we only want to do things right.

Turn Around Time

Have you ever heard "good labor isn't cheap and cheap labor isn't good" Well there's a saying we have here that is similar;  "If you want good fast labor it's going to cost you"  That's because if our good laborer has to stay overtime and we have to pay him more to get a job done faster, that cost is added to the final bill of a full car paint job.

If you vehicle can be here for 2 months with no issues in timing for you it's going to be much more affordable than if you need it done in 2 weeks.

There are many other factors to determine the cost to paint an entire vehicle than you might have though.  The process is an intensive process, especially if you have damage to the panels or there's rust or brittle parts that require replacement.  All these factors will determine the cost of your full paint job and the final outcome really is dictated by how much you are willing to pay for perfection or if you just want it close to perfection.

Another major factor in the cost to repaint a car is if you want to change the color of the vehicle.  If you want to keep the color the same, we don't need to paint the inside of the panels and the visible insides of your vehicle.  This includes things like door jambs, inside of doors, under the hood, under the trunk and many other areas that will have to be prepared by removing paneling and parts as well as masking the entire inside of your vehicle.  Changing the color of your vehicle if you want it done right can as much as double a cost to repaint a vehicle.

Contrary to what you might think.  It is far easier to repair a collision than it is to re-paint an entire vehicle even if it is the same color.  With many car accidents we have a handful of affected parts and we just replace or repair them and paint and blend that part of the vehicle.  With a full paint job, the vehicle might be here as long as it would take us to repair 2-3 collisions in that same bay.  So this leads me to a conversation about OVERHEAD.

I would love to just say yeah bring it by and we will just re-spray it in a few hours like many people think but it's just simply not that simple.

Another thing that comes up alot with people is them thinking we could paint their vehicle over night or something.  A good rule of thumb for an entire prep and paint job of a whole vehicle is 5 days for every thousand dollars in cost.  So if your paint job is going to cost 5k then the time is going to be about 3 weeks.

When people here it's going to take a month they get almost angry with me as if I want it to take this long.  If we just masked over everything we could have it done very fast but it's not the case.

When a vehicle is getting painted at a factory it's down to bare metal and they don't have to remove and re-install everything and that stuff takes time and cannot be rushed.
